Late Thakur Hira Singh
(Founder DAV Public School Greyoh)
Late Thakur Hira Singh was born in a village Greyoh on 29th Sep,1929 .He was the eldest child of his parents. He had been a bright student but due to poor economic conditions of family he could not complete his matriculation and left the school after passing class 9th. He left the family and went to Punjab in search of livelihood to support the family.
There he worked with a Dhaba and started contributing towards his family. Besides working with dhaba he continued his studies and completed his matriculation as a private candidate.
Soon after he joined Indian army and served the motherland for 5 years. Besides this he managed to continue his studies and completed his graduation as a private candidate. He left the Army and joined as a primary teacher in Himachal Pradesh.
He served as JBT,TGT, Headmaster and officiating DEO in district Kinnaur . He had been an excellent teacher and able administrator. His students had a great respect for him and they still owe their success to his guidance and quality teaching. He had been very honest, dedicated and great supporter of economically weaker section of the society. He had also been a great social worker and an active politician. He remained as a district level BJP president and member BJP core committee for many years. He is very much known for providing all kind of support to poor people in getting jobs in various govt. departments in state.
Inclination towards DAV Institutions
As soon as his elder son completed his matriculation, he decided to get him admitted in Punjab University and specifically in DAV College Chandigarh. During this time he frequently visited the college and got highly influenced by the DAV philosophy and contribution of DAV institutions in the field of Indian Education and there he conceived the idea of opening a DAV School at his native place, after his retirement.
After his retirement in 1987 he started searching for a suitable piece of land on the roadside in the nearby towns but failed to get. Finally he decided to donate his own land in his village and started the construction work of 2-rooms from his own resources. He collected donations through door to door visits in the surrounding villages. And finally in 1992 he got the approval from DAVCMC for opening a new school named as DAV Public School Greyoh at village Greyoh. It was very difficult to convince the masses about private school as there was no concept of private schooling, at that time ,in the area. Moreover it had been a great challenge to run the English medium school in a village as qualified and efficient staff was hardly available. Hence he used to groom the teachers after the school hours & inspect the classes on regular basis.
He believed in the saying, “It is better to be illiterate than ill-taught”.
Mission- CBSE affiliation
Since the parents were not happy with school’s affiliation with H.P. Board of school education, he decided to get the school affiliated to CBSE. This had been a new challenge and he started working on this mission. He met the CBSE authorities regarding various rules and regulations/requirements for CBSE affiliation. Finally in the year 2002 he got succeeded in his mission.
He was extremely happy to see the turning of seed into plant, which he sowed 15 yrs back. But unfortunately due to his deteriorating health conditions he fell ill and could not recover and finally in the year 2004, left for his heavenly abode.
Last 20 years of life was a full time devotion to conceptualize and realize his vision and mission .His selfless sacrifice and contribution in the field of education will always remain a great source of inspiration to the generations to come.
